Kratom: Clinical Insights, Risks, and Local Perspectives

Please join us for an informative workshop exploring the complexities of Kratom: Clinical Insights, Risks, and Local Perspectives on Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 3:45 PM. Register for this free event here.

This session will provide a foundational overview of the substance, covering its clinical aspects, prevalence of use, and associated public health considerations.

Presenters include Ilana Gerjuoy, Health Policy Coordinator, Communities That Care, FRCOG, and Karen Carmona, Program Associate, Opioid Task Force of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region, and will also feature Dr. Ari Kriegsman, FASAM, Medical Director, Springfield Opioid Treatment Program, Behavioral Health Network, who will be available to answer your questions.

Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the following topics:

1) The Basics: Learn about kratom, including natural leaf and semi-synthetic forms like 7-OH.
2) Biological Impact: Understand the effects of kratom on the body and brain, as well as the motivations behind its use.
3) Risks and Treatment: Consider the risks associated with kratom, including potential dependence and addiction, alongside insights into kratom use disorder and current treatment approaches.
4) Policy and Regulation: Examine the landscape of regulation, including local accessibility and examples of regional bans and their associated challenges.

This presentation aims to equip participants with essential, evidence-based knowledge. We will also include time for Q&A to address specific questions.
