SUMMARY:Evidence-Based Practices to Prevent Overdose: National Findings from the HEALing Communities Study and Its Local Impact
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, October 24\, 2024\, at 2 PM as we focus on “Evidence-based Practices to Prevent Overdose: National Findings from the HEALing Communities Study and Its Local Impact.” One can register for this free\, virtual event\, here. \nFeaturing Alexander Y. Walley\, MD\, MSc\, Care Continuum Core Director\, HEALing Communities Study\, Massachusetts Medical Director\, Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services\, and Professor\, Boston University Avedisian & Chobanian School of Medicine\, participants will learn about the \n1) HEALing Communities Study’s implementation and findings. \n2) Learnings from the Franklin County/North Quabbin context and Action Plan. \n3) Proposed next step effort and innovations. \nLaunched in 2019\, the HEALing Communities Study was a bold experiment. Part of its approach was to invest 343.7 million dollars in 67 communities across the four states of Kentucky\, Massachusetts\, New York\, and Ohio to reduce opioid-related fatalities using various strategies to implement three goals: \n1) increasing naloxone distribution and overdose prevention education\, \n2) increasing access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD)\, and \n3) improving opioid prescribing safety. Massachusetts had 16 communities participating in the study\, of which the four Franklin County and North Quabbin communities of Athol\, Greenfield\, Montague\, and Orange were combined into one community cluster. \nPart of the Opioid Task Force’s 2024 HEALing Communities Study Lessons Learned Educational Series. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Good Samaritan Law: How It Works and Why It's Important
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, October 30\, 2024\, at 1 PM as we learn more about “The Good Samaritan Law: How It Works and Why It’s Important” with Becky Michaels\, Assistant District Attorney and Director of Community Prosecution Projects with the Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan’s Office. \nOne can register for this free event here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUlcuuupz0pGdBsquWDguJfANJeATo8tmiM \nThere can be considerable confusion about the intent of the Good Samaritan Law\, which was designed to shield individuals from liability if they make a mistake when helping someone in need. Using the Good Samaritan Law is especially important when responding to overdose in a variety of settings. This session will help broaden our understanding of its aims. \nThis is part of the 2024-2025 CONNECT Education and Training Series. \nCONNECT is a post-opioid overdose community outreach and follow-up initiative that launched on July 1\, 2021. It is an interdisciplinary project overseen by the Opioid Task Force of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region. \nCollaborative partners include: \n\n30 municipal police\, fire\, and EMS departments of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region\nChildren’s Advocacy Center of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region\, Inc.\nCommunity Health Center of Franklin County\nKelley Research Associates\nNorth Quabbin Community Coalition\nNorth Quabbin Recovery Center\nTapestry\nThe RECOVER Project Questions?\n\nPlease contact Nicole St. Hilaire\, CONNECT’s Outreach Manager\, at nicole@opioidtaskforce.org.

SUMMARY:Nitazenes and Other Drug Trends
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome Dr. Traci Green and other members of her team to discuss “Nitazenes and Other Drug Trends” on Wednesday\, December 18\, 2024\, from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. They range in potency and have started to show up in the illicit drug supply in the Commonwealth and elsewhere in the United States. During the presentation\, Dr. Green will also discuss Xylazine\, Medetomidine\, BTMPS\, and other drug trends being monitored across the state. \nDuring this training\, participants will learn about the substances being found in the Massachusetts drug supply\, their associated health effects\, and how they impact overdose and overdose response. \nDr. Green\, a nationally recognized epidemiologist\, is the Director of the Opioid Policy Research Collaborative (OPRC) housed at Brandeis University. Her research explores drug use\, opioid use disorder\, and drug-related injury. \nThis is part of the 2024-2025 CONNECT Education and Training Series. CONNECT is Franklin County and the North Quabbin’s post-opioid overdose community outreach and follow-up initiative.
